If you’ve ever stayed up late for “one more episode,” you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Cliffhangers.

Today I’ll share how to use them to your advantage.

P.S. yesterday, we learned how to run experiments to make consistency fun. Catch up on previous posts here.

What do cliffhangers have to do with the Zeignarik Effect?

You remember unfinished or interrupted tasks better than completed tasks.

When the story seems unfinished…

Your mind can’t help but to think about it.

So you watch the next episode.

This interactive comic explains it well: https://growth.design/case-studies/zeigarnik-effect

How can you use it to stay consistent in your habits?

Start something and leave it unfinished.

Examples:

  • Lay out your gym clothes the night before, so you can “finish” putting them on

  • Prepare your healthy breakfasts the day (or week) before

  • Create a progress bar or calendar you can only “finish” checking off once your habit is completed

Were you consistent with your habits today?
